We suggest that you thoroughly investigate any employment situation before taking action. Below are a few suggested topics that you should consider discussing with your future employer or employee.
Employers:
- Ask for references before inviting a student to your home
- Be very clear regarding the requirements and expectations for your job
- If a job requires driving, request the student's driving history
- Ask if the student has any health conditions that may affect the job
Students:
- Ask employers for references from previous household workers
- Research the location of the job
- Be very clear regarding your capabilities and experience
- Do not attempt to do a job that you are not qualified for
- Speak with the employer extensively before accepting a job and if you have any reservations about your safety, decline the job offer
- Notify friends and family of where you will be working and the nature of your work and consider traveling with someone you trust to the job location as a safety precaution.
